Commercial sectional doors for workshops and units

A commercial sectional door is a heavier-duty sectional door for workshops, small industrial units, farm buildings and trade premises, built with thicker panels, stronger tracks and springs rated for more cycles, and usually motorised with a three-phase or heavy-duty single-phase operator. Vision panels and pass doors are common options.

How is it different from a domestic door?

Commercial doors open more often and are often bigger, so they use springs rated for higher cycle counts, heavier hardware and operators built for frequent use. The safety requirements for powered doors at work also apply.

What size of premises do you cover?

This page covers workshops, small units, garages for vans and plant, and farm buildings. For large loading bays with dock levellers and shelters, a specialist industrial installer is the right route.

Which operator suits a commercial door?

Shaft-mounted operators are common on commercial sectional doors because they handle heavier doors and higher use. Three-phase power is typical, though single-phase versions exist.

What are the duties at work?

Powered doors in workplaces must be safe and maintained. In Great Britain that falls under workplace and work equipment law, and in Northern Ireland under its equivalent regulations. Regular servicing with records is the practical way to show the door is kept safe.

Can a commercial door be insulated?

Yes. Insulated panels are standard on most commercial sectional doors and help heated workshops keep costs down.

Do I need permission?

Replacing a garage door does not normally need planning permission anywhere in the UK. The usual exceptions are listed buildings, conservation areas, Article 4 areas in England and newer estates where planning conditions restrict changes to garages. Planning rules by nation →

Powered doors and the law. A garage door fitted with an operator counts as a machine under the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, whether it is at home or at work. Whoever puts the complete powered door into service must check it against BS EN 12453, including measuring closing forces with a calibrated meter, and issue a Declaration of Conformity and apply UKCA or CE marking (CE marking in Northern Ireland). That includes motorising an existing manual door, which is why a conversion is always set up and tested as a new powered door. More on the standards →
