Smart garage door openers: what they do and how to stay secure
A smart opener connects your garage door operator to your home Wi-Fi, through a module or built-in hardware, so you can open, close and check the door from a phone app, get alerts, and share time-limited access. It adds convenience, not safety: the door still relies on its own force limits and photocells.

What you can do with one
- Open and close the door from your phone.
- See whether the door is open and get alerts if it is left open.
- Share access with family members, and remove it when needed.
- On some systems, schedule closing or link to other smart home devices.
Will it work with my door?
Many current operators accept a smart module or have Wi-Fi built in. Older operators may need a replacement. We check compatibility before quoting.
Staying secure
- Use a strong Wi-Fi password and keep the router updated.
- Keep the app and firmware up to date.
- Use unique logins and two-step verification where offered.
- Only share access you can revoke, and review it from time to time.
Remote operation and safety
If you close the door when you cannot see it, the door must rely on its safety devices. Make sure photocells are fitted and working, and test the auto-reverse monthly.
