What should Watford homeowners know about side sectional doors?
When does a side sectional beat an overhead door?
If you have a low ceiling, a beam just above the opening, ceiling storage or a loft hatch you want to keep using, a side-sliding door avoids the ceiling altogether. It needs clear wall space on one side instead.
How much side room is needed?
The door parks along one side wall, so that wall needs to be clear for roughly the width of the door, plus a small amount of side room on the other jamb. Shelving, windows or a side door on the parking wall can rule it out, which is why we look at the whole garage at survey.

Our free survey checks the opening, headroom above it, room either side for the tracks, garage depth and where an operator will be powered from.
Planning and regulations for Watford homes
If your property in Watford is listed, in a conservation area or on an estate with planning conditions, the local district or borough council is the authority to check with before ordering.
English planning rules normally treat a replacement garage door as permitted. Listed status, conservation areas, Article 4 directions and estate planning conditions are what can change that.

Questions from Watford customers
Can a side sectional door be insulated?
Yes, the panels are insulated in the same way as overhead sectional doors.
Will a side sectional fit if I have a side door?
It depends where the side door is. The parking wall needs to be clear, so a side door on that wall can stop it fitting.
Which parts of Watford do you cover?
We cover Watford across postcode districts WD1, WD2, WD17, WD18, WD24, WD25, along with nearby Bushey, Rickmansworth and Borehamwood. Dates are agreed when you book.
Will the local district or borough council need to approve my new garage door?
Usually not. Replacing a garage door, including with an electric sectional door, does not normally need planning permission in England unless the house is listed, in a conservation area or Article 4 area, or has planning conditions affecting the garage. If in doubt, ask the local district or borough council before ordering.
