Electric sectional garage doors: what matters for Hertford garages
Can I control it from my phone?
Many current operators accept a smart module or have one built in, so you can open, close and check the door from an app. This is useful for deliveries and for checking you shut the door, though it should never replace the safety systems on the door itself.
What safety features should it have?
A power-operated door needs force limitation so it stops and reverses if it meets resistance, and photocells across the opening are a sensible addition so the door will not close on a car, child or pet. Doors put into service in the UK should meet the product standard BS EN 13241, with the powered-door safety requirements of BS EN 12453, including force limits measured with a calibrated meter, applied when the door is set up.
Which options are available in Hertford?
- Battery backupKeeps the door running for a few cycles in a power cut on supported operators.
- Handsets and wall buttonUsually two handsets plus an internal push button; extra handsets available.
- PhotocellsInfra-red safety beams across the opening.
- Smart controlApp control through a module or built-in Wi-Fi on selected operators.
How much does an electric sectional door cost in Hertford?
Guide price: £2,095–£3,495 inc VAT. Prices include VAT and fitting. Building work to the opening or a new electrical circuit would be quoted separately.
At the free survey we measure everything the manufacturer needs, check the brickwork, lintel and floor, and agree the door details with you.
Do you need permission in Hertford?
Hertford falls under the local district or borough council for planning and building control, which is the place to check if your home is listed or in a conservation area.
English planning rules normally treat a replacement garage door as permitted. Listed status, conservation areas, Article 4 directions and estate planning conditions are what can change that.
If the garage already has a socket near the operator position, no electrical notification is needed. A brand-new circuit is notifiable under Part P in England.

Questions from Hertford customers
How long do garage door motors last?
With a balanced door and an annual service, a domestic operator commonly gives many years of use. An unbalanced door with tired springs shortens motor life.
Can I add more remotes later?
Yes. Extra handsets can be coded to most operators, and we can do this on a service visit.
Do you cover Hertford?
Yes. We cover Hertford, including postcode districts SG12, SG13, SG14. Installation and visit dates depend on installer availability and are agreed when you book.
Do I need planning permission for a new garage door in Hertford?
Usually not. Replacing a garage door, including with an electric sectional door, does not normally need planning permission in England unless the house is listed, in a conservation area or Article 4 area, or has planning conditions affecting the garage. If in doubt, check with the local district or borough council.
Do you also cover towns near Hertford?
Yes. Close to Hertford we also cover Ware (2 mi), Hoddesdon (4 mi), Welwyn Garden City (6 mi) and Hatfield (7 mi).
