Choosing an electric sectional door for a home in Edinburgh
How does the operator work?
A motor unit is fixed to the garage ceiling and connected to the top section of the door by a carriage running on a rail. When you press the handset, the carriage pulls the door up the tracks while the springs on the door do most of the lifting. The motor only has to guide a door that is already balanced.
What happens in a power cut?
Every electric sectional door has an emergency release, a cord inside that disconnects the carriage so the door can be lifted by hand. If the garage has no other way in, an external emergency release lock can be added.
What can you choose for your Edinburgh garage?
- External releaseLockable external emergency release for garages with no other access.
- PhotocellsInfra-red safety beams across the opening.
- Battery backupKeeps the door running for a few cycles in a power cut on supported operators.
- Smart controlApp control through a module or built-in Wi-Fi on selected operators.
What will an electric sectional door cost in Edinburgh?
Guide price: £2,095–£3,495 inc VAT. That covers the door, fitting, removal of a standard old door and VAT; the fixed price follows the free survey.
At the free survey we measure everything the manufacturer needs, check the brickwork, lintel and floor, and agree the door details with you.
Planning and regulations for Edinburgh homes
If your property in Edinburgh is listed, in a conservation area or on an estate with planning conditions, City of Edinburgh Council is the authority to check with before ordering.
Scottish rules normally allow a like-for-like garage door without permission. Conservation areas are stricter because the householder permitted development class for external alterations does not apply there.
Electrical work for an operator in Scotland should meet BS 7671 and be certified by a competent electrician; a warrant is not normally needed.

Questions from Edinburgh customers
Will the door open in a power cut?
Yes, by hand. Pull the emergency release cord and the door can be lifted manually. Some operators also accept a backup battery.
Can I add more remotes later?
Yes. Extra handsets can be coded to most operators, and we can do this on a service visit.
Which parts of Edinburgh do you cover?
We cover Edinburgh across postcode districts EH1, EH2, EH3, EH7, EH8, EH9, along with nearby Musselburgh, Bonnyrigg and Livingston. Dates are agreed when you book.
Will City of Edinburgh Council need to approve my new garage door?
Usually not for a like-for-like door. In Scotland a visibly different door in a conservation area is likely to need permission, and listed buildings need consent. If in doubt, ask City of Edinburgh Council before ordering.
Do you also cover towns near Edinburgh?
Yes. Close to Edinburgh we also cover Musselburgh (6 mi), Bonnyrigg (6 mi) and Livingston (13 mi).
