What should Bonnyrigg homeowners know about electric sectional doors?
How quiet are modern operators?
Belt-driven operators running on a balanced door are quiet enough for integral garages with bedrooms above. Chain drives are robust but louder. We specify the drive type on your quote.
How does the operator work?
A motor unit is fixed to the garage ceiling and connected to the top section of the door by a carriage running on a rail. When you press the handset, the carriage pulls the door up the tracks while the springs on the door do most of the lifting. The motor only has to guide a door that is already balanced.
Which options are available in Bonnyrigg?
- Belt or chain driveBelt drives are quieter; chain drives are hard-wearing.
- Battery backupKeeps the door running for a few cycles in a power cut on supported operators.
- External releaseLockable external emergency release for garages with no other access.
- Handsets and wall buttonUsually two handsets plus an internal push button; extra handsets available.
What will an electric sectional door cost in Bonnyrigg?

Planning and regulations for Bonnyrigg homes
If your property in Bonnyrigg is listed, in a conservation area or on an estate with planning conditions, Midlothian Council is the authority to check with before ordering.
In Scotland a door that does not materially change the look of the house is not usually development. A visibly different door in a conservation area is likely to need permission, and listed buildings need consent.
Scotland has no Part P, but the socket or spur for an operator should be installed and certified to BS 7671.

Questions from Bonnyrigg customers
How long do garage door motors last?
With a balanced door and an annual service, a domestic operator commonly gives many years of use. An unbalanced door with tired springs shortens motor life.
How much is an electric sectional garage door?
Guide prices for a single insulated electric sectional door, supplied and fitted, run £2,095–£3,495, from a standard ribbed door up to premium finishes with a quiet belt drive and app control. Doubles cost more. Your survey gives a fixed price.

Do I need planning permission for a new garage door in Bonnyrigg?
Usually not for a like-for-like door. In Scotland a visibly different door in a conservation area is likely to need permission, and listed buildings need consent. If in doubt, check with Midlothian Council.
