What should North Shields homeowners know about side sectional doors?
When does a side sectional beat an overhead door?
If you have a low ceiling, a beam just above the opening, ceiling storage or a loft hatch you want to keep using, a side-sliding door avoids the ceiling altogether. It needs clear wall space on one side instead.
How much side room is needed?
The door parks along one side wall, so that wall needs to be clear for roughly the width of the door, plus a small amount of side room on the other jamb. Shelving, windows or a side door on the parking wall can rule it out, which is why we look at the whole garage at survey.
Which options are available in North Shields?
- FinishesMost ribbed, flush and woodgrain finishes, with vertical panel joints.
- Partial openingWalk-through position on motorised versions.
- Electric or manualDedicated side-sliding operator or manual handle and lock.
What will a side sectional door cost in North Shields?
Guide price: from £3,495 inc VAT. The figure includes VAT, fitting and taking away a standard old door. Your survey turns it into a fixed price.
At the free survey we measure everything the manufacturer needs, check the brickwork, lintel and floor, and agree the door details with you.
What rules apply in North Shields?
The planning authority for North Shields is North Tyneside Council. A replacement garage door is usually outside planning control, but it is worth a quick check where conditions apply.
English planning rules normally treat a replacement garage door as permitted. Listed status, conservation areas, Article 4 directions and estate planning conditions are what can change that.

Questions from North Shields customers
Will a side sectional fit if I have a side door?
It depends where the side door is. The parking wall needs to be clear, so a side door on that wall can stop it fitting.
Can a side sectional door be insulated?
Yes, the panels are insulated in the same way as overhead sectional doors.
Do you cover North Shields?
Yes. We cover North Shields, including postcode districts NE25, NE26, NE27, NE29, NE30, NE33. Installation and visit dates depend on installer availability and are agreed when you book.
Do I need planning permission for a new garage door in North Shields?
Usually not. Replacing a garage door, including with an electric sectional door, does not normally need planning permission in England unless the house is listed, in a conservation area or Article 4 area, or has planning conditions affecting the garage. If in doubt, check with North Tyneside Council.
