Side sectional garage doors in the Scottish Borders
Our side sectional door service covers the Scottish Borders: Hawick, Galashiels, Peebles and Kelso, plus the surrounding area, with each door made to measure after a free survey.
A side sectional garage door is made of vertical panels that run sideways on a curved track and park along the inside wall of the garage instead of under the ceiling. It suits garages with little or no headroom, ceilings you want to keep clear, or roof spaces used for storage, and it can be opened part-way for walking in and out.

What should you know about side sectional doors in the Scottish Borders?
How does it compare on price?
Side sectional doors are more specialised, so they usually cost more than an equivalent overhead sectional door.
How much side room is needed?
The door parks along one side wall, so that wall needs to be clear for roughly the width of the door, plus a small amount of side room on the other jamb. Shelving, windows or a side door on the parking wall can rule it out, which is why we look at the whole garage at survey.
Is it secure?
The door runs in a top and bottom track and locks at the closing edge. Motorised versions are held closed by the drive when shut.
Which options can you choose?
- Electric or manualDedicated side-sliding operator or manual handle and lock.
- FinishesMost ribbed, flush and woodgrain finishes, with vertical panel joints.
- Partial openingWalk-through position on motorised versions.
How much does a side sectional door cost in the Scottish Borders?
Guide price: from £3,495 inc VAT. That covers the door, fitting, removal of a standard old door and VAT; the fixed price follows the free survey.
Our free survey checks the opening, headroom above it, room either side for the tracks, garage depth and where an operator will be powered from.
What rules apply in the Scottish Borders?
In Scotland, works that do not materially change the outside appearance of a house are not usually development, so a like-for-like garage door is normally fine. The householder permitted development class for external alterations does not apply in conservation areas, so a visibly different door in a conservation area is likely to need permission, and listed building consent is a separate requirement. Your council planning team can confirm.
Planning authorities in the Scottish Borders include Scottish Borders Council.

Questions about side sectional garage doors in the Scottish Borders
Will a side sectional fit if I have a side door?
It depends where the side door is. The parking wall needs to be clear, so a side door on that wall can stop it fitting.
Can it open part-way?
Yes. Many installations use a pedestrian opening position so you can walk in without opening the whole door.
Can a side sectional door be insulated?
Yes, the panels are insulated in the same way as overhead sectional doors.
Which towns in the Scottish Borders do you cover?
We cover Hawick, Galashiels, Peebles and Kelso and other towns across the Scottish Borders.
Do I need planning permission in the Scottish Borders?
Usually not for a like-for-like door. In Scotland a visibly different door in a conservation area is likely to need permission, and listed buildings need consent. Check with your local planning authority if in doubt.
