Choosing a large sectional door for a home in Tynemouth
When is a door oversized?
Anything taller than about 2.3 metres or wider than a typical double, roughly 5 metres, usually moves into larger spring and track specifications. Motorhome garages often need heights of 3 metres or more.
What about oak-framed and timber buildings?
Doors can be fixed to timber frames, but the fixings and any packers have to suit the frame, and green oak moves as it dries. The survey checks the frame and the fixing positions.
What can you choose for your Tynemouth garage?
- Vision rowsWindows across one section.
- High-lift tracksUse roof height so the door parks higher.
- Shaft or rail operatorSpecified to the door size.
- Heavier springsSpring sets sized to the larger door weight.
How much does a large sectional door cost in Tynemouth?
Guide price: from £4,495 inc VAT. The figure includes VAT, fitting and taking away a standard old door. Your survey turns it into a fixed price.
Our free survey checks the opening, headroom above it, room either side for the tracks, garage depth and where an operator will be powered from.
Planning and regulations for Tynemouth homes
If your property in Tynemouth is listed, in a conservation area or on an estate with planning conditions, North Tyneside Council is the authority to check with before ordering.
In England you can usually replace a garage door without planning permission. Check first if the house is listed, sits in a conservation area or Article 4 area, or was built with planning conditions covering the garage.

Questions from Tynemouth customers
Can a sectional door go in an oak barn?
Usually. The fixing method is matched to the frame, and allowance is made for timber movement.
Can you fit a sectional door to a motorhome garage?
Yes, provided the building has the height and structure for the tracks and the door. We measure headroom, side room and depth at survey.
Do you cover Tynemouth?
Yes. We cover Tynemouth, including postcode districts NE26, NE29, NE30, NE33. Installation and visit dates depend on installer availability and are agreed when you book.
Will North Tyneside Council need to approve my new garage door?
Usually not. Replacing a garage door, including with an electric sectional door, does not normally need planning permission in England unless the house is listed, in a conservation area or Article 4 area, or has planning conditions affecting the garage. If in doubt, ask North Tyneside Council before ordering.
