Key questions about large sectional doors in Sudbury
Do tall doors need more headroom?
A tall door needs a correspondingly long horizontal track and a suitable ceiling or roof structure to fix it to. Barns and garages with pitched roofs often have room for a high-lift or vertical-lift track that keeps the door higher up the roof slope.
What about oak-framed and timber buildings?
Doors can be fixed to timber frames, but the fixings and any packers have to suit the frame, and green oak moves as it dries. The survey checks the frame and the fixing positions.
What can you choose for your Sudbury garage?
- Heavier springsSpring sets sized to the larger door weight.
- Shaft or rail operatorSpecified to the door size.
- High-lift tracksUse roof height so the door parks higher.
- Vision rowsWindows across one section.

At the free survey we measure everything the manufacturer needs, check the brickwork, lintel and floor, and agree the door details with you.
Do you need permission in Sudbury?
Sudbury falls under the local district or borough council for planning and building control, which is the place to check if your home is listed or in a conservation area.
In England you can usually replace a garage door without planning permission. Check first if the house is listed, sits in a conservation area or Article 4 area, or was built with planning conditions covering the garage.

Questions from Sudbury customers
Will a large door need a special motor?
It needs an operator rated for its size and weight, which may be a heavier rail operator or a shaft-mounted unit.
How much is a large or oversized sectional door?
Large doors are priced on survey because size and structure vary so much. As a guide they start from £4,495 supplied and fitted.
Which parts of Sudbury do you cover?
We cover Sudbury across postcode districts CO10, along with nearby Haverhill, Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket. Dates are agreed when you book.
Will the local district or borough council need to approve my new garage door?
Usually not. Replacing a garage door, including with an electric sectional door, does not normally need planning permission in England unless the house is listed, in a conservation area or Article 4 area, or has planning conditions affecting the garage. If in doubt, ask the local district or borough council before ordering.
