Choosing a large sectional door for a home in Ely
Do tall doors need more headroom?
A tall door needs a correspondingly long horizontal track and a suitable ceiling or roof structure to fix it to. Barns and garages with pitched roofs often have room for a high-lift or vertical-lift track that keeps the door higher up the roof slope.
Can large doors be insulated and glazed?
Yes. Most large doors use insulated panels, and window rows or vision panels can be added to bring light into a long garage.
Which options are available in Ely?
- High-lift tracksUse roof height so the door parks higher.
- Shaft or rail operatorSpecified to the door size.
- Vision rowsWindows across one section.
- Heavier springsSpring sets sized to the larger door weight.
What will a large sectional door cost in Ely?
Guide price: from £4,495 inc VAT. That covers the door, fitting, removal of a standard old door and VAT; the fixed price follows the free survey.
At the free survey we measure everything the manufacturer needs, check the brickwork, lintel and floor, and agree the door details with you.
Do you need permission in Ely?
Planning questions for homes in Ely go to the local district or borough council. Most garage door swaps need no permission, but conservation areas and listed buildings are the exceptions.
In England you can usually replace a garage door without planning permission. Check first if the house is listed, sits in a conservation area or Article 4 area, or was built with planning conditions covering the garage.

Questions from Ely customers
How much is a large or oversized sectional door?
Large doors are priced on survey because size and structure vary so much. As a guide they start from £4,495 supplied and fitted.
Can you fit a sectional door to a motorhome garage?
Yes, provided the building has the height and structure for the tracks and the door. We measure headroom, side room and depth at survey.
Do you cover Ely?
Yes. We cover Ely, including postcode districts CB6. Installation and visit dates depend on installer availability and are agreed when you book.
Do I need planning permission for a new garage door in Ely?
Usually not. Replacing a garage door, including with an electric sectional door, does not normally need planning permission in England unless the house is listed, in a conservation area or Article 4 area, or has planning conditions affecting the garage. If in doubt, check with the local district or borough council.

Yes. Close to Ely we also cover Newmarket (12 mi), March (13 mi) and Cambridge (15 mi).
