Choosing an electric sectional door for a home in Smethwick
What happens in a power cut?
Every electric sectional door has an emergency release, a cord inside that disconnects the carriage so the door can be lifted by hand. If the garage has no other way in, an external emergency release lock can be added.
What safety features should it have?
A power-operated door needs force limitation so it stops and reverses if it meets resistance, and photocells across the opening are a sensible addition so the door will not close on a car, child or pet. Doors put into service in the UK should meet the product standard BS EN 13241, with the powered-door safety requirements of BS EN 12453, including force limits measured with a calibrated meter, applied when the door is set up.
What can you choose for your Smethwick garage?
- Smart controlApp control through a module or built-in Wi-Fi on selected operators.
- Belt or chain driveBelt drives are quieter; chain drives are hard-wearing.
- External releaseLockable external emergency release for garages with no other access.
- PhotocellsInfra-red safety beams across the opening.
How much does an electric sectional door cost in Smethwick?
Guide price: £2,095–£3,495 inc VAT. The figure includes VAT, fitting and taking away a standard old door. Your survey turns it into a fixed price.
The survey is free and there is no obligation. We measure width, height, headroom, side room and depth, and look at power for an operator.
Do you need permission in Smethwick?
The planning authority for Smethwick is Sandwell Council. A replacement garage door is usually outside planning control, but it is worth a quick check where conditions apply.
English planning rules normally treat a replacement garage door as permitted. Listed status, conservation areas, Article 4 directions and estate planning conditions are what can change that.
Operators normally run from a switched fused spur; adding one to an existing circuit is not notifiable in England, but a new circuit falls under Part P.

Questions from Smethwick customers
Will the door open in a power cut?
Yes, by hand. Pull the emergency release cord and the door can be lifted manually. Some operators also accept a backup battery.
Can I add more remotes later?
Yes. Extra handsets can be coded to most operators, and we can do this on a service visit.
Which parts of Smethwick do you cover?
We cover Smethwick across postcode districts B16, B18, B21, B66, B67, B68, along with nearby West Bromwich, Birmingham and Halesowen. Dates are agreed when you book.
Will Sandwell Council need to approve my new garage door?
Usually not. Replacing a garage door, including with an electric sectional door, does not normally need planning permission in England unless the house is listed, in a conservation area or Article 4 area, or has planning conditions affecting the garage. If in doubt, ask Sandwell Council before ordering.
