Key questions about electric sectional doors in Thurso
Can my existing manual sectional be motorised?
Often, yes, if the door is in good order and properly balanced. Converting a manual door to powered operation changes the safety position, so the door must be checked and set up to the powered-door standards, not just fitted with a motor.
What safety features should it have?
A power-operated door needs force limitation so it stops and reverses if it meets resistance, and photocells across the opening are a sensible addition so the door will not close on a car, child or pet. Doors put into service in the UK should meet the product standard BS EN 13241, with the powered-door safety requirements of BS EN 12453, including force limits measured with a calibrated meter, applied when the door is set up.
What can you choose for your Thurso garage?
- Smart controlApp control through a module or built-in Wi-Fi on selected operators.
- Handsets and wall buttonUsually two handsets plus an internal push button; extra handsets available.
- Battery backupKeeps the door running for a few cycles in a power cut on supported operators.
- PhotocellsInfra-red safety beams across the opening.
What will an electric sectional door cost in Thurso?
Guide price: £2,095–£3,495 inc VAT. Prices include VAT and fitting. Building work to the opening or a new electrical circuit would be quoted separately.
The survey is free and there is no obligation. We measure width, height, headroom, side room and depth, and look at power for an operator.
What rules apply in Thurso?
Thurso falls under Highland Council for planning and building control, which is the place to check if your home is listed or in a conservation area.
In Scotland a door that does not materially change the look of the house is not usually development. A visibly different door in a conservation area is likely to need permission, and listed buildings need consent.
Scotland has no Part P, but the socket or spur for an operator should be installed and certified to BS 7671.

Questions from Thurso customers
Can I add more remotes later?
Yes. Extra handsets can be coded to most operators, and we can do this on a service visit.
Can you fit an electric door if I do not have a socket in the garage?
Yes. We note it at survey and include the electrical work needed on your quote, or you can have your own electrician fit a switched fused spur or socket before fitting day.
Do you cover Thurso?
We cover Thurso by arrangement. Because of the distance, we confirm availability and any travel cost before you book, and the cost is shown separately on your quote.
Will Highland Council need to approve my new garage door?
Usually not for a like-for-like door. In Scotland a visibly different door in a conservation area is likely to need permission, and listed buildings need consent. If in doubt, ask Highland Council before ordering.
Which other places do you cover by arrangement?
In the Highlands and Islands we also cover Wick and Kirkwall by arrangement, with any travel cost shown on the quote.
