Electric sectional garage doors: what matters for Brixton garages
How quiet are modern operators?
Belt-driven operators running on a balanced door are quiet enough for integral garages with bedrooms above. Chain drives are robust but louder. We specify the drive type on your quote.
Can my existing manual sectional be motorised?
Often, yes, if the door is in good order and properly balanced. Converting a manual door to powered operation changes the safety position, so the door must be checked and set up to the powered-door standards, not just fitted with a motor.
Which options are available in Brixton?
- Handsets and wall buttonUsually two handsets plus an internal push button; extra handsets available.
- External releaseLockable external emergency release for garages with no other access.
- Battery backupKeeps the door running for a few cycles in a power cut on supported operators.
- Belt or chain driveBelt drives are quieter; chain drives are hard-wearing.
How much does an electric sectional door cost in Brixton?
Guide price: £2,095–£3,495 inc VAT. The figure includes VAT, fitting and taking away a standard old door. Your survey turns it into a fixed price.
Our free survey checks the opening, headroom above it, room either side for the tracks, garage depth and where an operator will be powered from.
Do you need permission in Brixton?
Brixton falls under the local London borough council for planning and building control, which is the place to check if your home is listed or in a conservation area.
English planning rules normally treat a replacement garage door as permitted. Listed status, conservation areas, Article 4 directions and estate planning conditions are what can change that.
Operators normally run from a switched fused spur; adding one to an existing circuit is not notifiable in England, but a new circuit falls under Part P.

Questions from Brixton customers
Can you fit an electric door if I do not have a socket in the garage?
Yes. We note it at survey and include the electrical work needed on your quote, or you can have your own electrician fit a switched fused spur or socket before fitting day.
Will the door open in a power cut?
Yes, by hand. Pull the emergency release cord and the door can be lifted manually. Some operators also accept a backup battery.
Which parts of Brixton do you cover?
We cover Brixton across postcode districts SE5, SE24, SW2, SW4, SW8, SW9, along with nearby Peckham, Battersea and Central London. Dates are agreed when you book.
Do I need planning permission for a new garage door in Brixton?
Usually not. Replacing a garage door, including with an electric sectional door, does not normally need planning permission in England unless the house is listed, in a conservation area or Article 4 area, or has planning conditions affecting the garage. If in doubt, check with the local London borough council.
