What should Newtownards homeowners know about electric sectional doors?
What happens in a power cut?
Every electric sectional door has an emergency release, a cord inside that disconnects the carriage so the door can be lifted by hand. If the garage has no other way in, an external emergency release lock can be added.
How quiet are modern operators?
Belt-driven operators running on a balanced door are quiet enough for integral garages with bedrooms above. Chain drives are robust but louder. We specify the drive type on your quote.
What can you choose for your Newtownards garage?
- External releaseLockable external emergency release for garages with no other access.
- Smart controlApp control through a module or built-in Wi-Fi on selected operators.
- PhotocellsInfra-red safety beams across the opening.
- Handsets and wall buttonUsually two handsets plus an internal push button; extra handsets available.

Planning and regulations for Newtownards homes
If your property in Newtownards is listed, in a conservation area or on an estate with planning conditions, Ards and North Down Borough Council is the authority to check with before ordering.
Northern Ireland planning rules usually allow a replacement garage door in the same opening. Check with the council planning office first if the property is listed or in a conservation area.
Northern Ireland has no Part P equivalent, but electrical work for an operator should still be done to BS 7671 and certified.
Under the Windsor Framework, products placed on the market in Northern Ireland follow EU rules, so doors carry CE marking (with UKNI where a UK body assessed them). UKCA marking on its own is not accepted in Northern Ireland.

Questions from Newtownards customers
Are electric garage doors safe with children and pets?
A correctly set up powered door limits closing force and reverses on contact, and photocells stop it closing when the beam is broken. We test these on fitting day and recommend testing them monthly.
Will the door open in a power cut?
Yes, by hand. Pull the emergency release cord and the door can be lifted manually. Some operators also accept a backup battery.
Which parts of Newtownards do you cover?
We cover Newtownards across postcode districts BT23, along with nearby Bangor (County Down), Belfast and Carrickfergus. Dates are agreed when you book.
Will Ards and North Down Borough Council need to approve my new garage door?
Usually not when the door goes into the existing opening. In Northern Ireland, check first if the property is listed or in a conservation area. If in doubt, ask Ards and North Down Borough Council before ordering.
Do you also cover towns near Newtownards?
Yes. Close to Newtownards we also cover Bangor (County Down) (5 mi), Belfast (9 mi), Carrickfergus (10 mi) and Newtownabbey (10 mi).
