Choosing a double sectional door for a home in Cheltenham
Will a standard operator lift it?
Domestic operators come in ratings for different door areas. Wide doors need an operator rated for the size and weight, and on very wide or heavy doors a more powerful unit or a different drive arrangement is specified.
Does a wider door need different springs?
Yes. A double door is far heavier than a single, so it runs on a larger spring set, usually torsion springs on a longer shaft, and heavier-gauge tracks and cables. These are sized to the exact door weight by the manufacturer.
What can you choose for your Cheltenham garage?

- Heavier operatorOperator rated for the door area and weight.
- Window insertsRows of windows in one section for daylight.
- Any designRibbed, large rib, flush, cassette, woodgrain and glazed options.
What will a double sectional door cost in Cheltenham?
Guide price: £3,295–£4,995 inc VAT. That covers the door, fitting, removal of a standard old door and VAT; the fixed price follows the free survey.
At the free survey we measure everything the manufacturer needs, check the brickwork, lintel and floor, and agree the door details with you.
Planning and regulations for Cheltenham homes
The planning authority for Cheltenham is the local district or borough council. A replacement garage door is usually outside planning control, but it is worth a quick check where conditions apply.
English planning rules normally treat a replacement garage door as permitted. Listed status, conservation areas, Article 4 directions and estate planning conditions are what can change that.

Questions from Cheltenham customers
Can the door be made to a non-standard width?
Yes. Sectional doors are made to measure, so non-standard widths and heights are normal.
Can you replace two single doors with one double sectional?
Only if the central pier can be removed safely. That needs structural assessment and often a new lintel, which is arranged separately before the door is ordered.
Do you cover Cheltenham?
Yes. We cover Cheltenham, including postcode districts GL50, GL51, GL52, GL53. Installation and visit dates depend on installer availability and are agreed when you book.
Will the local district or borough council need to approve my new garage door?
Usually not. Replacing a garage door, including with an electric sectional door, does not normally need planning permission in England unless the house is listed, in a conservation area or Article 4 area, or has planning conditions affecting the garage. If in doubt, ask the local district or borough council before ordering.
Do you also cover towns near Cheltenham?
Yes. Close to Cheltenham we also cover Tewkesbury (7 mi), Gloucester (7 mi), Stroud (12 mi) and Cirencester (13 mi).
