Commercial sectional doors for workshops and units: what matters for Bishop's Stortford garages
How is it different from a domestic door?
Commercial doors open more often and are often bigger, so they use springs rated for higher cycle counts, heavier hardware and operators built for frequent use. The safety requirements for powered doors at work also apply.
Which operator suits a commercial door?
Shaft-mounted operators are common on commercial sectional doors because they handle heavier doors and higher use. Three-phase power is typical, though single-phase versions exist.

What will a commercial sectional door cost in Bishop's Stortford?
Guide price: from £3,500 + VAT. The figure includes VAT, fitting and taking away a standard old door. Your survey turns it into a fixed price.
At the free survey we measure everything the manufacturer needs, check the brickwork, lintel and floor, and agree the door details with you.
Do you need permission in Bishop's Stortford?
Bishop's Stortford falls under the local district or borough council for planning and building control, which is the place to check if your home is listed or in a conservation area.
English planning rules normally treat a replacement garage door as permitted. Listed status, conservation areas, Article 4 directions and estate planning conditions are what can change that.
Operators normally run from a switched fused spur; adding one to an existing circuit is not notifiable in England, but a new circuit falls under Part P.
At work, powered doors must also be maintained under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and PUWER 1998.

Questions from Bishop's Stortford customers
Do commercial doors need servicing?
Yes. Powered doors at work should be maintained and checked regularly, with records kept.
Do you fit loading bay equipment?
No. We fit sectional doors to workshops and small units. Dock levellers, shelters and full loading bays need a specialist industrial door company.
Which parts of Bishop's Stortford do you cover?
We cover Bishop's Stortford across postcode districts CM23, along with nearby Ware, Hoddesdon and Hertford. Dates are agreed when you book.
Will the local district or borough council need to approve my new garage door?
Usually not. Replacing a garage door, including with an electric sectional door, does not normally need planning permission in England unless the house is listed, in a conservation area or Article 4 area, or has planning conditions affecting the garage. If in doubt, ask the local district or borough council before ordering.
Do you also cover towns near Bishop's Stortford?
Yes. Close to Bishop's Stortford we also cover Ware (9 mi), Hoddesdon (10 mi), Hertford (11 mi) and Cheshunt (14 mi).
